Earth Day to May Day is an awareness campaign that emerged in 1995 with a coalition of 105 labor, environmental, community, farmer, and student organizations in Wisconsin in iterations of statewide, regional, and now national efforts. The campaign’s intention was to build awareness of the call for a global climate strike which has since then expanded throughout the country as our climate crisis persists.
Working class people who are mostly minorities are greatly affected by the climate crisis as proven by environmental racism. The Earth Day to May Day Campaign emphasizes how we can sustain both our planet and population in the face of an economic and climate crisis. The need for democracy and justice as related to the intersection of the labor rights movement and the environmental rights movement.
DCWF is dedicated to increasing worker and community control and using democratic ownership to create meaningful solutions to climate change. We want to uplift the work that is being done locally and nationally that address both labor rights and environmental stewardship.
If you are a collective, cooperative, organization, individual, etc who’s hosting and/or promoting an Earth Day and/or May Day-related event between April-May in Detroit and its surrounding area, we’d like to highlight your events and resources on our website! We plan to have a community calendar and list of pooled resources for folks to access.
